The Android 6.0.1 #Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (#GalaxyS6Edge) was rolled out about a couple of weeks ago and since updates are made available by region, many owners just started receiving notifications now. But just like previous updates, Android M also brings some issues on the S6 Edge and in this article, I will address a very serious problemâ"phone wonât charge via USB cable.




Battery efficiency is one of Googleâs areas of focus for Marshmallow so itâs disappointing to know that Samsungâs flagship devices are suffering from power-related issues shortly after the update. Below is one of the problems we received from our readers that best describes this issue:
âHi I download the Marshmallow update for the Galaxy S6 Edge yesterday and today, the phone wonât charge if plugged in. However, it charges fine when charged wirelessly. Prior to the update, I was away and I didnât bring my wireless charger, only the cable. I was able to charge it before I downloaded, so Iâm sure it was only after the update that this problem started. What shall I do? Help me please. Thanks.â
Based on the problem above, here are some possibilities I can think of:
- Something is blocking the USB / utility port
- Damaged USB cable
- USB port is loose or damaged
- More serious hardware issue
Now that I told you what I think is causing the problem, I will guide you through troubleshooting this issue.
Step 1: Inspect the USB port to see if thereâs a lint or debris tha tâs blocking the cable from making contacts with the receptors. Based on the description, this is very possible considering the problem just started without apparent reason. Sure the phone has undergone a major update but itâs not enough to explain why it refuses to charge via USB cable but charges fine wirelessly. If you can see something that doesnât below, use a toothpick to get rid of it.
Step 2: If thereâs nothing blocking the USB cable, then try using a different cable to see if itâs a cable issue. If the phone charges with a different cord, then at least you know the device is working fine. This time, you need to physically inspect the cord to see if thereâs some kind of a break. You may also inspect both ends to see debris or foreign objects blocking the connectors. If everything looks fine, then itâs safe to rule out that the problem is inside the cover and thereâs no workaround for that; you need to buy a new cable or charger.
Step 3: Assuming the phone wouldnât charge even with a different USB cable, thereâs a chance itâs just a loose connection and the issue is with the USB port. Insert the cable and try to see if thereâs some kind of a play when you try to push it to any direction. If there is, then you need a technician for that.

Step 4: If itâs not a loose connection, then you need to send the phone in for further checkup. Itâs possible that the update messed up the phone for you but Iâm leaning on the fact that issues like this are often hardware-related and thereâs nothing we can do about that than seek help from a pro. We really canât be sure that it could be that the USB port needs replacement or itâs a more serious hardware issue.
However, before you actually send your phone in for repair, I suggest you do the master reset first to see if that makes a difference and also to delete all your personal information:
- First, backup all your data including your files, apps, pictures, videos, music, etc.
- Remove your Google account from your phone.
- Disable the screen locks youâve setup.
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays âPower on logoâ, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, âwipe data/factory resetâ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Vol Down button again until the option âYes â" delete all user dataâ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight âReboot system nowâ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
It would be wise to tell the technician that the problem started shortly after the Marshmallow update. If I were the one to fix this, I would reinstall the previous firmware version to see if the problem would be fixed because if so, then all you need to do is wait for the next update.
