Introduction
While Sony went after high-end smartphones this time around, Huawei opted to show us mid-rangers, Acer was the one to give us low-cost yet attractive devices. We saw three devices to premiere at IFA - Liquid Z6, Liquid Z6 Plus, and Iconia Talk S.
The Iconia Talk S is a tablet capable of making phone calls, but it wasnt available for hands-on at the Acers booth. The Liquid Z6 and Z6 Plus were though, and we are giving them a proper close-up treatment.

Our hands-on meetings kick off right after the break.
Acer Liquid Z6 hands-on
Acers Liquid Z6 is quite an affordable smartphone at â¬119 and yet it seems to tick all the right boxes. The Z6 offers a very stylish and seamless design and while it is made of nice matte plastic, it still looks beautiful.
Acer Liquid Z6
The Liquid Z6 utilizes a 5 " regular LCD panel of 720p resolution, and while its pixel density wont impress anyone, its more than enough for a budget phone. The viewing angles are OK, the contrast is very good, and the colors look punchy. The screen is cover with the trending 2.5D glass, but there was no word if its hardened on some way or not.
The 5" screen
The Z6 runs on the on the MT6737 chip with a quad-core 1.25GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T720MP2 GPU, and 1GB of RAM. This sounds about right for a budget phone and the lightweight Marshmallow should be fine. Heavy-duty games are out of the question, but you should be fine with anything else.
The rest of the Liquid Z6 specs include 8 gigs expandable storage, an 8MP main camera, a 2MP selfie snap per, and a 2,000 mAh battery.
The main camera is 8MP
The Z6 is very compact and lightweight and fits great in every pocket. Handling it revealed no surprises - fingerprints stick on the front glass, but the matte plastic isnt prone to such.
The black and white flavors of Liquid Z6
There are no surprises in the control set of the Liquid Z6 - there are three capacitive keys below the screen, volume and power keys around the sides, and the mandatory microUSB port and (still) 3.5mm jack.
The Liquid Z6 control set
The Liquid Z6 will be released this November EMEA region at â¬119 price ($130).
Acer Liquid Z6 Plus hands-on
The Acer Liquid Z6 Plus is an impressive upgrade ov er the regular Z6 and if it wasnt the mediocre chipset we might have considered it as a mid-ranger.
The Z6 Plus is made of metal which is an exterior booster any smartphone fan enjoys. There are noticeable plastic strips around the back to hide the antennas compartments, which somewhat disturb the seamless design.
Acer Liquid Z6 Plus
The Acer Liquid Z6 Plus, as the name suggests, is the bigger one with a 5.5" IPS 1080p display, enhanced with a 2.5D curved glass. It is powered by a snappier MT6753 chip with a quad-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A53 CPU, Mali-T720 GPU, and 3GB of RAM.
There are other upgrades, too, worthy of the extra cash to the Plus moniker. The Liquid Z6 Plus comes with 32GB expandable storage, a fingerprint scanner, a 13MP main camera, a 5MP selfie shooter, and a beefy 4,080 mAh battery.
The main camera is now 13MP
The IPS matrix upgrade allows for better viewing angles and greater contrast, while the colors look even punchier. The screen bezels are nothing to talk about, but we like the accented Home key, which doubles as fingerprint scanner.
The battery is sealed, quite expectedly because of the metal shell, and once again no surprises around the phones controls.
Acer Liquid Z6 Plus keys
Handling the Liquid Z6 Plus is a pleasure given its metal origin. Its big at 5.5" and yet single-handed operations are easy and you can do it most of the time. The thin shell helps the handling too, but the grip is nigh compromised because the curved profile.
Indeed, Acer upped the screen size and resolution, added extra megapixels on both snappers, there is a faster processor and GPU, triple the RAM, double the storage and double the battery.
The massive upgrade has its cost though - the phone will be sold at the EMEA region starting December for â¬249 ($280).
Acer Predator 21 X hands-on
Acer didnt bring just smartphones at IFA - the company is among the biggest PC makes worldwide and one of the main focuses at IFA were the new Windows 10 notebooks. The most interesting one is the Predator 21 X with a curved display aimed at the serious, on-the-go games.
Acer Predator 21 X
Theres no going away from the fact that the Predator 21 X is a monstrous beast. Its the first gaming laptop to sport a 21" curved IPS display of 2560 x 1080px and its dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs support the awesome G-Sync technology. The CPU options include the latest 7th-gen Intel Core K-series.
Inside the belly of the beast is space for up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM and four terabytes of SSD storage. As youd imagine, t his machine isnt light, as it weighs 8kg, but we guess that was to be expected. It was designed to be moved easily, not to be light on your lap.
Its heavy and there are other goodies to blame for that, too - Tobi eye-tracking, LED RGB mechanical keyboard with CherryMX switches and a SoundPound2+ sound system (4 speakers and 2 subwoofers). The list of cool features goes on with a numpad that flips over to become a touchpad, a large window that shows off a few of the five cooling fans.
Acer Predator 21 X
You bet Acer brought the Predator 21 X at IFA and it looks, well, alien. Its impressive however you look at it, and while it is he avy, it offers uncompromising gaming experience and a ton of coolness.
Each Predator 21 X will be made to order and shipping starts in January, 2017. Pricing is yet to be detailed.
Acer StarVR hands-on
Acer collaborated with Starbreeze and IMAX for a new breed of VR headset. Acer didnt want to compete in the home VR experience segment and instead jumped on the public entertainment, such is the IMAX.
This new StarVR will be available in the LAs IMAX VR Center, which will have a grand opening this year. This is just the first experience center of many others to follow soon after.
As you can see StarVR isnt even targeting the end users, instead Acer wants to ship it directly in mass batches to other companies.
The StarVR has a 5K resolution and offers 210-degree field-of-view. It looks really good and is almost like having a full peripheral visio n at your disposal, blur-free. The effect is achieved by two different panels positioned at a specific angle and a bunch of sophisticated lenses.
Acer StarVR
Instead of two individual ocular lenses, the headset has just one big viewport for your eyes, like a ski mask. Interestingly, the seam between the two panels is barely noticeable, but its there.
The good news is that the headset is quite lightweight.
Currently the headset supports only head-tracking, but Acer says it is experimenting with room-tracking and even other sensors. Right now they are testing a shotgun accessory with tracking and shooting.
Acer StarVR
It seems Acer experiments may indeed succeed into blurring the line between the spectator and participant in movies and games, but we are yet to experience that. Then again the first game centers utilizing the headset will open later this year and we cant wait to try one of these in action.
! ( hope useful)
